Reach New Delhi late night on April 9, 2006. What strikes you most is the traffic, the noise - all my senses are overwhelmed, the smells of indian food, the incessant 'horns' as the drivers overtake almost violently to reach faster wherever.. If you find peace here, yes you'd have reached Nirvana.More pics from Delhi .
April 10, 2006 - the next morning, wake up to go to Red fort and such. But our driver takes us to a temple which he's sure we will enjoy. It's next to impossible for people here to think you maynot want to see the thousands of temples here! The temple is closed - but this wonderful lady in front of the temple gives me a nice photograph - sitting and selling little pouches of tobacco or 'Gutka' that much of India is addicted to ( and responsible for much of the oral cancers here ) - Incidentally now, this picture is in Wikipedia :)
On the roads in New Delhi. - two very young women in sarees wait to cross the road.
Much of Delhi's houses look like this ! Clothes laid out to dry on balconies, walls, streets everywhere..
The driver kindly agrees to take us to Qutb Minar. Extremely hot day with temperatures in the 100F range. Drink some stall lemon juice to get loose change for the entry fee. Surely Delhi Belly is not far off :)
Qutb Minar - built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who also built Taj Mahal. Similar beautiful arches pillars and architecture here.My mother has climbed to the top of the Qutb Minar once but after a stampede killing many children quite some years back - climbing the minar is no longer permitted.
Very green surroundings around the Minar. There are young couples all over the place. India is not very friendly to folks of the opposite sexes meeting in public. Kissing in public is an offence and will get you a Rupee 500 fine - so today's newspaper reports! This among other places like Lodhi Gardens are where they meet for some privacy
A closer look at the Minar - in Urdu script that I cannot read.
April 11, 2006 - early morning drive to Okhla bird sanctuary near Delhi - pretty deserted. A lone boatman there says the most migratory birds left in Feb-March, tho there are some resident birds. The only way to bird is by boat that takes us thru marshy ( and stinky) land.. there are ibises flying by, and this 'Black Ibis' or red-naped ibis is calmly perched on top of a tree.
