July 16, 2010. Bald Eagles on Homer spit.

Started the day with a 6 hour cruise to the Gull island rookery and the island of Seldovia, in 1900s much larger than Homer, but today a smaller chunk of paradise in the south shores of Kachemak Bay. The ride was choppy and the boat did navigate around the Gull Island rookery, but the constant swaying didn't result in great pictures. One of the fellow passengers, a Nikonite, had a giant stabilizer and he showed off pictures of a flying puffin.

We were dropped off at Seldovia around noon and had a great brunch at the Mad Fish Restaurant. Then some touristy shopping for a pair of earrings with Beluga whales on them!!! Also a tribal Alaskan girl sign on a piece of fur, and an Ulu knife. Then a walk up to the Russian Orthodox Church, and back to the Discovery, our cruise boat at the dock. Well worth the $45.

Back to Homer at 5pm. Dropped off parental units at the B&B, then drove around Homer Spit with K, looking for bald eagles. Spotted this one on the lamp post outside the Pier One theater, which was playing the prominently advertised play "Dead Man's Cell Phone" to packed houses. We, however, were more interested in the eagle, and chased it all over the spit.

There were two eagles. Everytime the first took off from the top of the lamp post the second would land. A little Alaskan girl probably six or seven years old walked up to V and wanted to know if she could hold the telephoto lens. V obliged. They then looked through the pictures V had shot. Soon, her little brother showed up too and asked V why she shot bald eagles. V said "Just like that!". So he said he would want to be a bald eagle had he not been a human! Such profound insight!! The kids then ran off to play and we continued pursuing the eagles. They kept us busy until 10pm, after which we said our goodbyes.
July 9, 2010 - Bald eagle in flight.

We hiked the 5 mile Goat trail, starting at the base of Horsetail Falls and climbing rapidly to the base of a splendid water body. Lunch was had and plenty of photo-ops exploited. However, the highlight of the day was the stopover on the shores of Valdez at the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery , frequented by bald eagles, juvenile bald eagles, and a ton of seagulls flying against the gorgeous backdrop of snow-crest mountains.
