on February 4, 2007thanks all ! thanks Kim for those id tips..the red tail obviously has some more features other than that tail!I have this bird book, but when you don't know what you're looking for, you don't see :)

on February 4, 2007Perfect exposure, Vandana. You can see every feather. And thanks Kim for the ID tips. I don't know how I know a hawk is a RTH; I just know, but maybe that is part of it. Around here, there is really nothing bigger than a redtail except an eagle.

on February 3, 2007Excellent capture! (FYI one of the identification marks on a red tail is the brown belly band...that horizontal row of brown feathers near his middle..that is one of the main marks from below, as is the dark brown group of feathers on what we would call the shoulders at the top of the wings near his body. There are others from above, but his red tail is usually visible from there :-) Also, I personally begin my own elimination of species of hawks...when the belly band is not as distinct as it is here, and notice that his underside tail feathers do NOT have any bands...) Out your way you have many more kinds of hawks than here in the northeast...but you can start with those clues next time. BTW, I am not an expert by any means..I'm just trying to be helpful so you can have an easier time with the ID next time.)

on February 3, 2007Good thing your camera does not look like a small rodent.... or wait maybe that would be good.... as you would get some great close ups as he snatched it out of your hands. ... or wait that would mean you would lose the camera :( -- back to the original... he/she's looking right at ya!
